Special needs school on failing schools list

PELHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The Linda Nolen Learning Center in Pelham is the only Shelby County school to appear on the list.

The Alabama Department of Education released the listed on June 18th as part of the Alabama Accountability Act, which allows parents of student in failing schools to move them to a better performing public or private school.

Schools on the list are those performing on the bottom 6 percent in a statewide yearly progress report.

The school serves students with a variety of disabilities, autism, as well as emotional and behavioral problems.

Cindy Warner, spokeswoman for the Shelby County School System says the school should not be held to the same standards as others in the state.
