BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – For most pregnant women, enjoying a drink at the local bar is not an option.
However, a new study shows that it may actually be an option when alcohol is consumed in moderation.
A study released by the British Medical Journal found that when moms consumed a moderate amount of alcohol, it had no adverse effect on her child’s balance years later, which is a marker for brain development.
The distinction then must be made — what is a moderate amount?
Three to seven glasses of alcohol a week is what the study deemed as moderate alcohol consumption.
While the study was released in Britain, it likely won’t become a recommendation in the United States.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says studies have consistently shown even a little bit of alcohol is risky.
They advise mothers not to take the risk.
