Citywide vigil honors recent homicide victims

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)- A rash of homicides, ten in nine days, is causing a stir across the city.  The people most affected, are the people who knew and loved the victims. Wanda Erskine lost her son to a homicide many years ago, and now uses her experience to heal the heartache of other mothers suffering through the loss of their children to gun violence with her organization, “Mothers Who Want The Violence To Stop.”  “So many of our babies are being shot down and killed in the streets of Birmingham,” she says. ”It’s just ridiculous.”

There have been so many deaths recently, Erskine and her group can’t plan individual tributes for the victims. Instead, they held a city-wide vigil Wednesday night at Jesus Is Real Ministry.  One of the attendees was Michelle Mims, mother of Carlos Mims, 20, who was killed on May 23rd.  “Sometimes I just wake up out my sleep because my son is gone and there isn’t anything anyone can do to bring him back,” she said after the vigil, fighting back tears.

Police are still searching for answers to many of the recent homicides.  Below is a list of the crimes committed since June 17th.  If you know anything about any of these cases, please call crime stoppers at (205) 254-7777.
