BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Every year, pet owners vaccinate their dogs for rabies, But have you ever considered a vaccine for snake bites?
The Rocky Ridge Animal Clinic is offering vaccinations after being approached by a pet owner who wanted to make sure his dog was vaccinated before a hunting trip to Texas.
The vaccine is made in California for rattle snake bites but Veterinarian Rodger Dieguez says it applies to other species as well.
“We typically don’t see a lot of rattle snake bites around here, but we see other snake bites. Copperheads are very common. We usually see four or five those each spring.”
The vaccine is recommended for anyone who takes their dog into the woods. It requires two injections several weeks apart and costs $45 each time.
Dr. Rodger Dieguez says that’s a much cheaper alternative to anti-venom after a bite which can cost more than one thousand dollars.
Snakes aren’t the only critters we have to be concerned about during the summer.
A two-inch scorpion greeted us in the CBS42 kitchen Wednesday morning.
A quick check online with the Alabama Poison Center tells us that there are more than a thousand species of scorpions worldwide…
But only one is a threat to humans in the U.S. and it’s found in the Western United States.
A sting from this little guy would be about the same as a bee sting.
Jason Bearden with Mosquito Joe Pest Control says that it’s important to check the seals and cracks around your home to keep bugs out.
Bearden also recommends keeping your home clean and food put away. Also it’s a good idea to take out the garbage regularly
“You don’t want the pests to come into the yard is the main focus. If they don’t get in, then they can’t come into the house. If you can cut down the number of pests coming into the yard, then they can’t get in so you are much better off if you can maintain a barrier around your property. ”
