Hanceville police officer kills K9 partner

HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) – Hanceville Police chief Bob Long says the department’s K-9 officer Anthony Childress was forced to shoot and kill his K-9 partner Monday during a routine training exercise.

Childress had worked with Ichi Bon, a six year old  Belgian Malinois for about a year. He told investigators that during the training he believes the dog mistook his side pants pocket for a reward toy.

Long says Ichi Bon was an intense and driven dog which is what made him such a good drug dog. However, when Childress fell down, something suddenly went wrong. Childress thinks the dog’s former training and biting instincts kicked in. Ichi Bon bit the officer’s leg and then his head.

Childress shot the dog in the torso as he was being attacked before being forced to put him down.

Long says the officer received multiple stitches in his head but has been released from the hospital. He is said to be very upset over the loss of his partner.
