Chief Roper: What causes crime?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A woman in West Birmingham is mourning the loss of her husband after he was shot and killed Saturday over an argument about a fish sandwich.

The city of Birmingham has seen eight homicides in the last eight days. Trifling arguments seemed to spur on the crimes in many of those cases. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper does not think the summer heat is to blame.

“Up until this rash, we had gone 10 days without a single homicide in the month of June,” Roper says, “So when people say, ‘It’s hot,’ well, it was hot then. And so we went 10 days without one and then all of a sudden we started getting a homicide per day.”

So what kinds of factors contribute to a person’s decision to pull the trigger? CBS 42 Reporter Kaitlin McCulley will have those answers tonight on CBS 42 News at 5.
