BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Many people who own guns in Alabama do not know where their firearms are located.
A 2012 audit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found that there are thousands of lost or stolen weapons across Alabama.
In 2012, there were 190,000 missing firearms nationwide reported to the police.
The audit found that 96 percent of the missing guns were stolen.
Most of the guns are from private owners, not dealers.
Alabama ranks 10th on a nationwide survey of lost or stolen firearms, with a total of 6,084 reported instances.
Of those reports, 95 were classified as lost.
Federal law requires a gun business with federal licenses to report missing firearms within 48 hours.
