BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Some schools are overhauling the snack food choices that are offered to students.
For some, this is the first makeover the snack food selection has seen in 30 years.
New federal rules set limits for fat, salt and sugar in school snacks – even those sold in vending machines.
Bake sales will still be allowed.
The Smart Snacks in School standards require snacks be limited to 200 calories while increasing protein whole grains and nutrients.
The rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, meant to help curb childhood obesity in the United States.
Schools and food and beverage companies have until July of 2014 to comply.
