Some veterans struggle with PTSD during 4th of July celebrations

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Most people look forward to July 4th celebrations.

Not everyone has that excitement, though.

For many veterans, July 4th fireworks celebrations can bring back horrifying memories.

Fireworks, which have a similar sound to the explosion of bombs, sometimes make it difficult for military veterans to enjoy the holiday.

The noises cause some to be pushed into survival mode, running from a room or crouching under furniture.

According to doctors, the reaction is caused by muscle memory from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The United States military isn’t sure just how many military personnel suffer from PTSD.

Many times the illness goes unreported because of embarrassment.
