SUMITON, Ala. (WIAT) – A Walker County animal shelter has been shut down because of unsafe and filthy conditions, according to rescue volunteers.
Shelter workers admitted they are overwhelmed.
About 140 cats and dogs have been removed from Nonnie’s Angels Animal Rescue Shelter had no air conditioning.
Temperatures at the shelter were estimated to be in the 90s inside the facility.
Many of the cats have been diagnosed with upper respiratory infections and ear mites.
Workers say they just couldn’t keep up with the county’s pet overpopulation.
The Sumiton Police Department says a criminal investigation is underway.
