BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Working overnight shifts is not something that’s uncommon in today’s day and age.
Now, new research has found that women who work nights for 30 years or more double their risk of getting breast cancer.
Previous studies on nurses, who tend to work many overnight shifts, had revealed similar results.
However, this study from the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine found the risk applies to all night shift work, not just nursing.
Researchers believe disruptions to melatonin, a sleep hormone, may be linked to the increased cancer risk.
