TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — The Fourth of July holiday was the perfect day to honor a hero who found for the United States’ freedom almost 70 years ago.
Sgt. Eli Nicosia fought in the Battle of Saipan during World War II.
On Thursday, he received a commemorative medal from the VFW Post in Saipan.
“You start to wonder ‘why in the hell didn’t I get wounded or killed?’ And the one answer I’ll give you is the man upstairs had a lot to do to see me through all of this,” Nicosia said. “I didn’t do it myself. Somebody had to stand up and help me.”
The medallion has only been awarded 600 times.
The inscription reads, “A grateful island remembers.”
