BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – More than 1,000 Birmingham students are participating in a unique program this summer.

It involves them going back to school  with the goal of staying focused on their education.

The program, called Breakthrough Birmingham, allows students to participate in 240 hours of rigorous academic classes over the course of six weeks.

The classes include math, literature, writing and science.

Additionally, the students are learning some valuable life lessons.

“Persistence is when you have obstacles or hardships, but you face them anyways,” Sydney Urquhart said. “You know that you have to finish. That’s what I’ve learned here at [Breakthrough Birmingham].”

Those interested in signing up for next summer’s camp can do so by clicking here.

Applications are being accepted through October 1, 2013.
