TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A well-known Tuscaloosa businessman is in a coma after a horrible case of mistaken identity.
Forty-three year old Jason McNeil was leaving a concert in Western New York when he was attacked by a complete stranger.
McNeil, who serves as a board member with United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama (UCP), was attending a Kid Rock concert in Buffalo when he was attacked.
As it turns out, the attack was a case of a mistaken identity. McNeil was never supposed to be the target.
However, the punch he endured was so severe he had to undergo brain surgery.
Craig Lawson, a 34-year-old from Ontario, Canada, is accused of attacking McNeil.
He’s charged with misdemeanor third degree assault.
UCP officials say doctors are just waiting and hoping that he will wake up.
Other board members of UCP say McNeil is a dream to work with and is incredibly involved in the community.
He is always helping others and volunteering whenever he can find the time.
Doctors believe McNeil will have a long rehabilitation process when he wakes up.
