GATE CITY, Ala. (WIAT)– A family in Birmingham who lost a child in an act of violence continues to mourn their loss. It’s been one year since two-year-old Deonte Mixon, was killed in Gate City. Now, his family is asking for more than prayers. They want justice.
A vigil was held to remember the toddler who was killed following a shoot out. He was standing by his mother’s side. When the first shots rang out, he was told to run inside, but before he could get there, a car carrying the shooter hopped the curb, striking the child and killing him.
But the vigil wasn’t just about remembering a young life lost. It’s a reminder to the public that the person responsible for his life being cut short is still out there, but Mixon’s family wants justice not just for him but for his aunt who died that night, as well. As for organizers, they hope vigils like this one will send a message and change the hearts of those who will not speak or who are considering violent actions themselves.
If you have any information about the driver of the car, that hit Mixon, please contact Crime Stoppers. Even the smallest detail could help to lead to an arrest. The number is: 205-254-7777.
