Annual wiener dog races held in Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. (WIAT) – The 17th annual Wiener Dog Races were held this weekend at Emerald Downs in the Seattle area.

A host of purebred Dachshunds raced for the chance to participate in the final race on Sunday.

All participating wiener dogs had to complete a trial race, which was held at Fisher Plaza in Seattle on Thursday.

“The owners of these dogs take this very seriously, and they use varying methods to get the dogs to run,” said Alan Budwill.  “Sometimes they’ll have a little squeaky toy or a tennis ball.  Other times they’re food-motivated, but they all have their way to train to get from one end to the other as quickly as possible.”

Twenty-two Dachshunds will compete against each other in the final race in the City of Auburn with the chance to earn the title of being the fastest wiener dog in the country.
