BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Former Birmingham mayor Richard Arrington Jr. is speaking out about the verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman.
Arrington Jr. says he has mixed emotions about the verdict and is very disappointed with the outcome.
“I think in some ways it is an indictment of the judicial system,” Arrington Jr. said. “There is something there. I can’t put my finger on it. I don’t think this was justice.”
Arrington Jr. says he believes the justice department should look into the case to see whether it meets the criteria for prosecution of any federal crimes.
Additionally, professional counselors and therapists have a lot of advice to offer as people react to the controversial verdict.
Birmingham Family Therapist Deborah Harris recommends expressing feelings in a verbal, non-violent way. She says that’s a great first step to coping with the reality of the verdict.
After that, Harris says it’s important to spend time thinking about a constructive response, such as possible community or political involvement.
“A constructive reaction to what has happened, or a constructive action that you can take – this is a call to action,” Harris said.
