BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Health experts say breast milk is essential for newborns, but some mothers are unable to produce sufficient milk.
That’s where the Northwest Mother’s Milk Bank comes into play.
A group of breastfeeding instructors opened the bank in Portland, Oregon, after seeing a need in the community.
The non-profit organization collects extra breast milk and then screens, pasteurizes and distributes the milk to area hospitals for premature and sick babies.
According to the organization, neonatal units receive the milk first, but the rest of the milk goes to area families.
