CRANE HILL, Ala. (WIAT) – There are several volunteer dive teams who are on call 24-7 to help recover victims along Smith Lake.
The Cullman County Sheriff’s dive team has some new members in training. Typically made up of about six men, on Wednesday their mission was to recover a stolen vehicle dumped into the lake.
Using a brand new six thousand dollar sonar system, these deputies are going as far down as 30 feet to recover the truck … what they’ll find inside is unknown.
Major Scott Clay “That’s what we want to rule out make sure check no one is in the vehicle”
Major Scott Clay says the biggest challenges are brush and trees, getting tangled in fishing wire, and total lack of vision.
In addition to the new sonar, new communication equipment allows divers to speak underwater to a radio up above using their masks.
Dive members say it’s not uncommon to make recoveries in the lake from as far down as 70 feet.
