HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) – A Hanceville man is in jail, charged with burglary and attempted arson after trying to burn down a local church.
Members say they’re astonished the church is still standing.
The Alabama State Fire Marshal really didn’t have an explanation for Reverend Dennis Reeves as to why his pulpit at Laodicea Freewill Baptist Church didn’t go up in flames.
“You’d think it would have burned fast and furious … but it didn’t.”
Instead, the edge of the papers were singed black and seemed to just stop in mid-smolder.
The same goes for the roll of paper towels set on fire that were put underneath the kitchen table. Both attempts to burn failed.
Police say the suspect admitted he’s a meth addict and must have been in the mood for a frozen dessert.
When arrested, he was still eating the ice cream stolen from the church’s freezer.
Laodicea’s revival is Thursday night and Friday night. It starts at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
