Bentley holds ceremonial signing of voting bill

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has held signed a bill that allows qualified emergency workers to vote by absentee ballot if they are on duty just before an election.

Bentley held the ceremonial signing Monday morning in the Circle of Flags at the Alabama Capitol. The bill passed the Legislature during the last session that ended in May.

Bentley says the legislation was inspired by many Alabama utility workers and other emergency responders who were in New Jersey or New York responding to Superstorm Sandy at the time of the November elections.

Bentley says the legislation assures emergency workers have the same right to vote as other citizens.
