HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) – UPDATE x3: On Thursday morning, Homewood Crime Scene Investigators reentered the Shahan home.
UPDATE x2: A friend of Shahan’s called police when she couldn’t get in touch with her. Sarah King lives next door to the Shahan home.
“My hope would be that it was somewhat of a random occurrence,” King said. “But that whatever it is that it will be found out and that they can somehow have peace with that.”
King said police told her it was safe to stay in her home and that she didn’t have to worry about a burglar or murderer on the loose. She is glad her children are staying with their father this week and were not home to see police activity.
“Because I didn’t have to explain the yellow police tape throughout the yard to two young children last night who would have been scared,” King said. “They wouldn’t have understood the broader picture, I’m sure.”
Much of the broader picture is still unclear. Shahan worked at the Hobby Lobby on Lakeshore Drive in Homewood. Staff there tell us everyone loved her. They didn’t know anything happened until a family member called this morning.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our employees,” Vincent Parker said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.”
Ministry staff at First Baptist Church of Birmingham declined our requests for interviews.
UPDATE: Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that the body found at 102 Hugh Circle on Tuesday is that of 52-year-old Karen Shahan.
She is the wife of Rev. Richard Shahan, associate pastor at First Baptist Church of Birmingham.
