HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT)- It isn’t something Hatfield’s Auto and Parts see a lot: cars with water damage. “There’s not a lot of flooding issues in Homewood,” said Trent Hatfield, owner of the body shop. Just down the road, however, is a major culprit of the flood damage he DOES see. The corner of Richard Arrington and Rosedale Drive pools considerably when it rains hard. Driver often times push their luck, and some pay significant consequences. ”When you go through it, water will come up through the fresh air intake,” explains Hatfield. ”It will go up through the cylinders and it will cause the motor to lock up.”
When this happens, there’s not a lot the driver or mechanics can do. Most insurance companies will total a car with this kind of damage. To avoid costly repairs, or losing your car all together, follow the simple mantra pushed by the National Weather Service: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. If you can’t see the road through the water, don’t try to cross it.
Attempting such maneuevers can be more costly than dollars and cents. The NWS estimates 50% of all drowning fatalities are caused by cars driving into flooded areas.
