BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Summer usually means more time spent in the great outdoors doing activities like fishing, boating, and swimming on lakes, rivers and at the beach.

Swimmers should be aware of bacteria and other medical issues they could face with a simple dip in a pond.

In the summer, bodies of water raise the risk of bacteria and illness.

For example, parasitic meningitis can bring about scary symptoms, such as a change in mental status and general weakness.

E-coli is a more common bacteria that can pop up in the summer.

There are a few ways to be able to enjoy the water and still reduce the risk of infection.

For instance, making sure not to ingest the water can greatly reduce the risk of any sickness.

Additionally, rinsing off immediately after one is done swimming can also reduce the risk of getting sick.
