Richard Shahan released from Homewood City Jail after questioning

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (3x): According to Lt. Ken Atkinson with the Homewood Police Department, Richard Shahan was released from the Homewood City Jail and police custody around 8 p.m. Friday evening.

Shahan was being held for questioning.

UPDATE (2x): Richard Shahan, who serves as a the Children and Families Pastor and Facilities Director at First Baptist Church of Birmingham, is being held at the Homewood City Jail  for questioning in connection with the murder of his wife, Karen Shahan.

The body of his wife was found in their home near the church on July 23, 2013.

Police say Shahan voluntarily went in for questioning on Wednesday, and that’s when police decided to keep him there.

At this time, Shahan has not been charged with anything.

UPDATE: Lt. Ken Atkinson with Homewood police has confirmed with CBS42 that Richard Shahan is being held at the Homewood City Jail for investigative purposes in connection with his wife’s murder.

Shahan came in voluntarily on Wednesday for an interview. After that interview, police decided to hold him.

At this time he has not been charged with any crime in connection with his wife’s death.

CBS 42 will provide you with the latest information as it becomes available.

ORIGINAL: Homewood Police are still investigating the murder of 52-year-old Karen Shahan.

About 10 crime scene investigators comb through every inch of Shahan’s home. They arrived around 9 a.m. They’re wearing plastic gloves and carrying brown paper bags in and out of the front door of the house.

An investigator uses a ladder to reach the roof, where he can oversee the search going on in the woods behind the home.

Neighbors who live nearby want more information from police. A representative from a home security system company arrives at a house across the street from Shahan’s home.

Ministry staff with First Baptist Church of Birmingham say they plan to release a statement by early afternoon.

On Thursday afternoon First Baptist Church of Birmingham released the following statement

First Baptist Church of Birmingham is saddened to announce that long-time church member Karen Shahan died on July 23, 2013 in Homewood, Alabama. Karen Shahan was a member of the church choir and the wife of First Baptist Church’s Children and Families Pastor, Rev. Richard Shahan. Karen Shahan’s body was discovered in the couple’s Homewood residence on the morning of July 23, 2013.

The cause of Karen Shahan’s death is undetermined at this time. The Homewood Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the occurrence. No further information relating to the police investigation has been made available to First Baptist Church of Birmingham.

Karen Shahan is survived by her husband and the couple’s two sons, Kyle and Colin (Elizabeth) and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements: Visitation will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 27, at First Baptist Church of Birmingham. A memorial service will follow at 12:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the Shahan family requests memorial gifts be made to First Baptist Church of Birmingham’s Children’s Ministry.
