BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Auburn University announced Thursday that its campus would be smoke-free on August 21, 2013.
While the change may sound like a drastic move, it’s certainly not the first move in that direction on campuses in Alabama.
The University of Alabama – Birmingham is another smoke free campus in the state.
As of July 1, UAB Hospital will not hire anyone who smokes. Random blood tests are also being conducted on employees hired after July 1.
Anyone employed with the hospital prior to July is grandfathered in and will be allowed to continue regardless of their decision to smoke or not.
The school says the policy is modeled after one implemented at the Cleveland Clinic.
