Who checks non-profits?

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The roles of non-profits are paramount; helping those who don’t quite have everything they need.

In the wake of the indictment of Gayle Cunningham, former Executive Director of the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity, for theft of nearly half a million dollars, some may wonder where are the checks and balances?

“No amount of controls can stop leakage from any given organization,” says Billy Baxter.

Baxter is the CEO of the Alabama Association of NonProfits, membership based organization formed to serve the needs of Alabama’s growing nonprofit sector.

He says there are best practices when it comes to managing contributions from donors.

“Staff certainly play a part, the board plays a part, the audit is very important.”

And most importantly maintaining the confidence from those who support them, he adds.

“Anytime that something happens in an organization that affects the confidence in that organization it’s an issue.”

You can research organizations you support on sites like Guidestar, While no system is full proof, any additional amount of knowledge about where you’re money is going will bring confidence.
