Birmingham making preparations for Empowerment Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham has commemorated the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement throughout 2013, and community leaders have been hard at work preparing for the largest commemoration events of the year.

Empowerment Week is set to be held the second week in September as part of the ongoing 50 Years Forward campaign.

Organizers say the week is designed to engage, educate and empower through speeches, panel discussions, community services and more.

Mayor William Bell says he believes the event will show how the city’s unity has developed over the past 50 years.

“We were a divided city in 1963, and we’re not a divided city anymore,” Mayor Bell said. “Do we agree on everything? No. But we all agree Birmingham is a great place to live, work and play, and we want to share that with the rest of the world.”

The events will be held Sept. 11 through Sept. 15.
