Group visits to doctors have pros and cons

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Unless you have a true medical emergency, oftentimes it can take weeks to get in to see a doctor.

When the time for that appointment arrives, though, many people only receive mere minutes of face-to-face time.

As an alternative, group visits allow more time with a doctor. However, group visits require patients to share time with others.

For some medical concerns, group visits are ideal.

For others, however, a private visit works better.

“We really try to emphasize to people that this is still a medical visit and they have to respect other people’s privacy and not sharing information outside of the group,” Dr. Devi Nampiaparampil of NYU Medical School said.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, 85 percent of patients who have tried group visits are happy with the arrangement.

Group visits are usually offered on a volunteer basis, but not all doctors offer them.
