BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB football team braved a rain-soaked Legion Field Wednesday morning as the squad completed the first of two workouts for the day.
UAB defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson, along with defensive back Jimmy Jean and defensive end Diaheem Watkins spoke with media members following the two-hour workout.
Johnson, who is in his second season as UAB’s defensive coordinator and coaches linebackers, says he likes what he has seen from his unit in the first week and a half of practice.
“I feel good and am encouraged,” Johnson said. “We have guys who are gifted and talented athletes, willing to learn and are coachable. They are doing everything that we are asking them to do right now, so we are pleased.”
The Blazers return eight starters on the defensive side of the ball this season, but Johnson expects to see an immediate impact from several newcomers.
“Competition is a beautiful thing, so those eight guys have to earn the right to be on the field,” Johnson commented. “Right now, we have enough guys to create a lot of competition, so we will see how it all shakes out.”
The Green and Gold will be back on the practice field at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, ahead of Thursday’s 9 a.m. workout.
