TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – The Air Crash Crew for Tuscaloosa’s Regional Airport is basically the same type of crew that responded to Wednesday morning’s crash at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport, and so Tuscaloosa firefighters understand a bit of how that similar training is paying off. They are also looking at the incident and asking themselves how they would respond in the event of a similar tragedy. That’s part of their training, which is extensive. All of the firefighters at Station 12 are ARF certificated. They also undergo training during every shift to comply with FAA standards. Firefighting officials say, the rules are completely different when they fight an aircraft fire, and they have to be prepared. One of the differences that they can always count on is the existence of fuel, which tends to make for a lot of extremely hot flames and dangerous conditions. To combat those issues, firefighters who are part of the air crash crew have different turn-out gear, vehicles, and extinguishing methods. Leigh Garner reports.
