BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The city of Birmingham has named September 11-15 Empowerment Week as part of the 50 Years Forward campaign. The campaign is meant to commemorate the events of 1963 that changed America.
While there are many local events planned to allow the community to come together, there is one national event taking place simultaneously across the country – the reading of the play “Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963.”
The Alys Stephens Center and ArtPlay will present Christina Hamm’s play as part of Project One Voice.
CBS42 sat in on one of the rehearsals for the local version directed by ArtPlay teaching artist Alicia Johnson-Williams.
She talked to CBS42 about the significance of the event in Birmingham.
Those who want to see the reading can do so at the Alys Stephens Center’s Sirote Theater on Sept. 15 at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $15.
