BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – As the investigation continues to determine what caused UPS Flight 1354 to crash, which resulted in the deaths of the two pilots on board, many people who had a package on the plane are left wondering what they’re supposed to do next.
It’s been less than 48 hours since the crash, and a vast majority of the several thousand people who had packages aboard the plane have been notified. Some people even have a replacement in the works.
Daniel Cambron placed an order on Amazon.com on Aug. 13 and decided to use overnight shipping.
His package was being transported on UPS Flight 1354 from Louisville, Kentucky, to Birmingham. When the plane crashed on its approach to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, all of the packages were destroyed or determined to be irreparable.
Cambron, who was still expecting to receive his package, received a notification on his smartphone that brought him anything but joy.
“I was definitely shocked to get an email,” Cambron said. “The wording just seemed kind of bizarre. ‘The package has been damaged and it’s discarded.’”
His package, as well as items bound for many other destinations, will all ultimately be discarded. Cambron didn’t have to wonder long about what he should do next, though.
Amazon informed Cambron that the company has already shipped a replacement for his items via Fed-Ex at no additional cost to him.
For others, such as Kristi Griem, losing the items she had aboard the plane was disheartening.
Griem works for Freeset, an organization that sells handmade items made by women in India who are victims of human trafficking. Proceeds from their sales benefit the women who make the handbags, shirts and other inventory sold by Freeset.
“The shipment was insured, so at some point we’ll be compensated,” Griem said. “At the present, those women are as devastated as we are, at the work of their hands.”
CBS42 attempted to reach out to UPS, but because the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is still investigating the incident, UPS cannot officially say how many packages were on the plane, if everyone who had a package on the plane has been notified or how they are going to inform people that their packages were discarded.
However, UPS did say they are proactively notifying customers of their loss and are working with them to resolve claims.
