BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Many people depend on coffee to get their day started.
According to new research conducted by the Mayo Clinic, drinking four or more cups a day will shorten a person’s life.
Researchers at the clinic followed 40,000 people and concluded that four or more cups a day causes a 21 percent higher mortality rate.
In people under the age of 55 who consume four or more cups of coffee each day, the mortality rate jumps to 50 percent.
The new research goes against a report from the National Institutes of Health in 2012, which said four cups or more could actually extend a person’s life.
Researchers also point out coffee drinkers are more likely to be smokers and have lower fitness levels.
However, researchers say the mortality findings hold true even after they adjusted their findings to account for those factors.
