St. Clair County looks to a female to improve the kicking game

Odenville, AL (WIAT)-After going 6-6 last year, the St. Clair County football team has high hopes of getting back to the postseason but it will take more than a good quarterback, explosive offense, and a solid defense.

“From last year we knew the kicking game was something we were going to have to improve on,” said head coach Alan Lee.

So the search began.

“We had to have a kicker and she stepped up and has been the best that we have on the team right now.”

You heard it right. Coach Alan Lee said “she” and her name is Kylee Harrell and she is just a freshman who also plays varsity volleyball and basketball while maintaining straight A’s in the classroom.

” Coach Hicks got me out of volleyball practice one day and he heard that I can kick,” said Harrell.  ”He said they needed a kicker and said I could if I wanted to.  I tried it and I thought I’d be good.  I was pretty good!”

I’d say 40 yards is pretty good!  That’s her longest field goal but right now her comfort zone is around the 30 yard mark.

“It’s actually easier to kick a football than it is a soccer ball.”

Soccer is Kylee’s favorite sport but without a varsity soccer team, she doesn’t have a field to call home.

“She can’t play soccer here so this was her way to use what she is good at for her team,” said Kylee’s mom Sondra Sheats.

What does her team think about having the only female in the history of the Fighting Saints football program?

“Those boys got my back,” Harrell said.  ”They all have my back.  They told me.”

So does the rest of the community who can’t wait to see her lace up the cleats and strap on the helmet under the Friday night lights.
