BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – As the new school year begins, many students are beginning the new year with backpacks filled with school books and tons of new supplies.
The combination of a new lunchbox, new notebooks, new clothes and new textbooks can weigh down a backpack and eventually cause back pain.
Doctors are seeing more and more complaints from students about back pain, especially when the backpack is not worn properly.
“The weight of the backpack should never be lower than the waist line, so the straps should be adjusted so that the backpack fits high up on her shoulders,” said Dr. David Marshall of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “The shoulder straps need to be two of them, not just one, and also they need to be wide and padded.”
It’s also important to make sure children use an abdominal strap to evenly distribute the weight of the backpack.
