Birmingham, AL (WIAT)-The Samford Bulldogs held their final full practice Wednesday before their season opener against Georgia State.

Samford is looking to start the season off with a win for the second year in a row.

“It’s always important to get off to a good start,” Samford co-offensive coordinator Brandon Herring said. “You want to start fast, but no matter who you’re playing or where you’re playing you want to do your best to come out of there with a win. It gets you off to a good start, it gets your confidence up and kind of gets you rolling into the flow the season.”

Friday night’s game at Georgia State is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) at the Georgia Dome.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team held its final full practice in preparation for Friday night’s season-opening game at Georgia State, with an hour-long workout in shorts and helmets Wednesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

In addition to being the first game week of the season, this week marked the start of fall classes on the Samford campus. Despite classes beginning, Samford co-offensive coordinator Brandon Herring said he liked the focus the team showed during the week.

“I think it went well,” Herring said. “I think the kids were focused. A lot of times when you start school, their heads can kind of go in different ways, but we were really focused. That was one thing the coaches talked about on Monday, the first day of school, the kids came out here and they were ready to go, their minds were on their business. I feel like we’ve had a pretty good week of prep.”

Samford is looking to start the season off with a win for the second year in a row. Last season, the Bulldogs defeated Furman, 24-21, to open the season. Herring talked about the importance of starting the season on a good note.

“It’s always important to get off to a good start,” Herring said. “You want to start fast, but no matter who you’re playing or where you’re playing you want to do your best to come out of there with a win. It gets you off to a good start, it gets your confidence up and kind of gets you rolling into the flow the season.”

The coaches also announced the team’s four captains for Friday night’s game. Senior quarterback Andy Summerlin, senior linebacker Justin Shade, senior defensive back Tae Lewis and senior running back and kick returner Fabian Truss will serve as team captains for the season opener at Georgia State.

The Bulldogs will hold a final walk-through Friday morning at Seibert Stadium. The team will then leave for Atlanta at 12:30 p.m.

Friday night’s game at Georgia State is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from the Georgia Dome. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The contest can also be heard locally on FM-99.5 The Vibe, or worldwide on the internet at www.995thevibe.com.  Any fans who will be in attendance at the Georgia Dome Friday night, but would still like to listen to the Samford radio broadcast can hear it in the stadium by tuning their radios to 102.1 FM.
