FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) — Neighbors in one Fairfield community were fed up with conditions in their neighborhood and reached out to CBS42 for help.

Conditions in what was once a thriving neighborhood in the area are shocking – overgrown lots, sidewalks that you can’t see, clogged drains, homes falling in.

At least eight were seen on one block on 41st Street alone when CBS42 visited the area. One street over, though, many of the same problems were present.

Gloria Matthews says she’s been to city hall. She’s tried to get action from her District 2 council member Primus Mack. So far, she’s gotten nowhere.

She’s afraid of crime and afraid of critters invading her community.

“Can you imagine rats, snakes and possums all in [a home]?” Matthews asked.

CBS42’s In Your Corner tried all week to get attention to the area by the Fairfield government – including trips to city hall and multiple calls and emails. All attempts garnered no response.

In Your Corner plans to be at the next city council meeting on Tuesday to force leaders to face questions about the condition of the neighborhood.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
