Football fight could lead to criminal charges

JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) – The football season is over for Walker High’s head coach who has resigned from his coaching responsibilities.. he could face formal charges.

While the Alabama High School Athletic Association is determining how to handle the school districts involved, legal action may also be taken.

Alabama law clearly states it’s a crime to harm a sports official, like a referee or a coach, even if it’s by another coach.

The Walker-Cullman fight between Walker Coach John Holladay and Cullman defensive coordinator Matt Hopper has some wondering if it will lead to legal action.

Alabama statutes state the assault of a sports official in the third degree is a Class C felony.

Holladay hasn’t been charged, but Jasper police are investigating.

The fight broke out friday night after a football game.

Cullman pulled out a close win, 13-10.
