PELHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Jack Donovan is the developer of the Grey Oaks subdivision in Pelham. Lately, he’s had to deal with a frustrating ordeal.
Pelham investigators are looking for some bold crooks that came in and essentially cleaned out his completely furnished five-bedroom model home in the subdivision.
“They took everything – from the peanut butter crackers in the pantry down to the welcome mat on the front doorstep,” Donovan explained.
In all, the lost items total about $60,000. To make matters even worse, insurance won’t pay for the loss, which has made Donovan quite frustrated.
“You will not steal from me and get away with it,” he commented. “You will not steal from Donovan Builders and get away with it. Right now, we’re offering a $10,000 [reward] for the arrest and conviction.”
Pelham Police Department Lt. Pete Folmar believes the offered reward will help find those responsible.
“Anything that generates information coming into the police department on a case like this is important,” Folmar said.
Law enforcement says there are many things that can be done to protect a home or model home. They advise installing a security system and making sure that all doors and windows are locked.
Additionally, they advise recording all serial numbers for appliances and electronics.
“That sort of thing is very beneficial, because all of those things are traceable if you have the serial numbers,” said Folmar.
He says the investigation is still in the preliminary stages, but the department is pursuing some leads.
Folmar also believes most of the stolen items will wind up being sold on internet sites, such as Craigslist, or at flea markets or yard sales.
