BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office discovered an illegal gambling operation after responding to reports of a robbery.

Deputies responded to a call around 1:30 a.m. on Monday to investigate a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, deputies learned the robbery occurred two hours prior to the initial call. The victim was hesitant to call and report the incident because of the illegal business being run.

Deputies seized and removed the illegal gambling machines from the business.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the owner of the business that housed the illegal gambling machines was robbed by three men he allowed inside to play the machines.

One of the men allowed inside complained to the owner that it was too hot. The owner moved to address the man’s complaint when the man brandished a gun and demanded money.

They found a shotgun inside the business and held it on patrons as they searched the owner for money. After the search, the three suspects fled the scene with an unknown amount of cash.

No charges have been filed at this time and the suspects are still at large.
