HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — The Homewood Fire Department is investigating how the second floor apartment fire at the Abbey at Boulder Ridge apartment complex started Sunday night.
The cause is still unknown at this time. The apartment manager says no one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured in the fire.
The fire started at about 8 p.m. Sunday night. There are 72 units in the building. Sixty-eight units are occupied.
Everyone in the building has been displaced, but the apartment complex is promising to try and rehouse all of the residents at other apartments in town that the company owns.
They are also asking the Greater Birmingham Apartment Association for assistance.
The Red Cross is on site Monday afternoon and is helping people with immediate needs.
According to Chris Osborne with the Red Cross, a shelter was opened Monday night which served about 12 residents. Many of the residents served had insurance. In all, 24 units were affected.
