SAMFORD FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team practiced for about two hours in full pads Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs are preparing for their home opener Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana.
The Bulldogs received some good news on Tuesday when it was announced that head coach Pat Sullivan will be with the team at Saturday’s contest.
“Just knowing that is a big lift already,” Samford assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Bill D’Ottavio said. “We’re all excited and I know he’s excited to be back. The kids are looking forward to having him here, and we’re so happy he’s back.”
The Bulldogs went through 24 periods of work during Tuesday’s practice. D’Ottavio said he liked the way the team responded during the practice.
“We had a really good practice today,” D’Ottavio said. “The kids came out here with a lot of spirit and a lot of effort and we got a lot of good things done.”
Southeastern Louisiana enters Saturday’s game with a record of 1-2, but their losses are at TCU and at then-sixth-ranked South Dakota State. D’Ottavio said he has been impressed with what he has seen from the Lions on film.
“That is a good football team,” D’Ottavio said. “Don’t let their record fool you, they’ve played TCU and the number six-ranked team in the country, and that was their two losses. They have weapons all over. On offense, they have a really good quarterback (Bryan Bennett), and they do a great job of spreading the ball around.
“On the defensive side, they are very active,” D’Ottavio said. “They’re very strong up front, they have an All-American in the secondary and a good linebacking corps. This is going to be a great challenge.”
Samford will practice again Wednesday afternoon. The workout is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
