BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A town hall meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Jackson-Olin High School, 1300 Avenue F. in Birmingham’s Ensley community this evening to discuss George Washington Carver Memorial Gardens.

State Representative Juandalynn Givan says she called the meeting in response to the tremendous community concern caused by the sudden,  unexplained closure of the cemetery.

So far the management or ownership has not communicated the official reason for the closure or what the plans are for it in the future.

We have been investigating the situation there and trying to reach someone in a position of authority over the property, but so far have not been able to reach anyone who can answer these questions.  Givan says the Governor’s Office is been very helpful in helping her make contact with the agencies which might have jurisdiction over the matter.  A representative of the Governor’s office confirms they are also trying to gather information about the situation.

Representative Givan is asking everyone with documentation of a purchase or transaction at the cemetery to bring it with them to the town hall meeting if possible.
