Birmingham pastor arrested in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WIAT) – Richard Shahan, the former pastor whose wife was found dead inside the family’s home on July 23, 2013, has been arrested in Tennessee and faces a murder charge in connection with his wife’s death.

According to the Homewood Police Department, Shahan was interviewed days after Karen Shahan’s body was discovered, but he was ultimately released.

Police issued a warrant for his arrest on Dec. 31, 2013 in connection with his wife’s murder.

Shahan was taken into custody by Homeland Security ICE agents at Nashville International Airport on Wednesday. He faces one charge of being a fugitive from justice in Tennessee.

He’s being held without bond.

Police say Shahan was trying to flee the country to Russia by way of Germany.

He’s currently in the custody of the Davidson County Jail in Tennessee and will have an extradition hearing on Jan. 7, 2014.
