Armed neighbors take on burglars in Pinson

PINSON, Ala. (WIAT) — Paul Trammell was snowed in at work on Highway 280 Tuesday and Wednesday.

He finally returned home Thursday and went to get lunch and groceries with his family.

They had just gotten back and walked in the door when he heard two gunshots next door.

He says he walked outside and saw three people running up the hill across the street.

His next door neighbor came outside and was hysterical, and he heard yelling coming from  inside her house.

He thought someone had been shot, so with his pistol on his side, Trammell chased after the burglars, surprised them in the woods, and told them to hit the ground.

Two ran off, but one dropped to the ground. Trammell and his neighbor’s son held the person until Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrived.

“I stuck a knee in his back and I put my pistol to his back, and I let him know that it was loaded and hot, and if I had to use it and if he made any sudden movements, I would,” said Trammell.

Trammell says he found out later the gunshots were warning shots fired by his neighbor’s son.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested one person at the scene and two other suspects about a half mile away from the neighborhood.

Trammell says he didn’t want to shoot anyone, but he felt he couldn’t stand by and do nothing.

Another house was broken into down the street in recent weeks, and one at a nearby neighborhood.

Now, residents are talking about starting a neighborhood watch.

As for Trammell, though, he says he always keeps his pistol locked and loaded and is ready just in case.
