Friends mourn the loss of Adams Inn fire victim

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Flames shoot from an abandoned Birmingham motel for the second time in a year. Birmingham Fire and Rescue got the call just before two this morning.

The fire, at the Adams Inn on 10th Street North, claimed one victim. A man was found inside one of the rooms.

Although his identity hasn’t been officially released, others at the hotel call him, “the can man”, someone well known in the homeless community.

Friends are not only mourning the loss of Nicholas Evans, they say the cold weather is partially to blame. Several people gathered outside the old Adams Inn while investigators were at the site on Friday.

They say, since the cold snap, people have been using the former hotel as a shelter, starting small camp fires inside to keep warm.

Wednesday and Thursday night the temperature dipped below freezing, several of the homeless people CBS42 spoke with say more shelters need to be set up right now so people don’t take these kinds of drastic measures.
