BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – As winter weather makes its way into the area today, it’s important to remember some very important tips for driving in the snow.
According to AAA, drivers should accelerate and decelerate slowly, which helps vehicles regain traction and avoid sliding and skidding around on the roads.
When braking, bear in mind that vehicles take a longer time slowing down on icy roads.
As such, it’s also a good idea to take your time and drive slowly. The entire driving process is slowed in winter weather conditions.
Don’t let yourself get into a hurry. Rather, take your time and be safe.
If possible, don’t stop. Keep the vehicle moving if you can. AAA advises drivers to slow down just enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, if possible.
Also, applying more pressure to the gas pedal when driving up hills won’t do anything but make the tires spin. Instead, AAA advises drivers to get a littler “inertia going on a flat roadway” before trying to make your way up a hill.
Lastly, if you don’t have to be on the roads, don’t get out and drive. The best way to ensure your safety while driving in treacherous road conditions is to not drive.
If you do have to venture out, make sure your car is filled up with gas. Take along a few blankets, a pillow, some toiletries, food, water and an extra pair of clothing or two.
