On Thursday, Sept. 12, a day of reflection will be held at 16th Street Baptist Church beginning at 9 a.m.
House and Senate leaders are formally awarding Congress’ highest civilian honor to four girls killed in an Alabama church bombing nearly 50 years ago.
September 11, 2013 marks what would have been the 100th birthday for legendary Alabama head coach Bear Bryant.
“Coming up he, he was greatly missed,” said Ware. “You know all the controversy and all the light is on the 4 little girls, but we’re so glad that…that people are now considering Virgil because he was, he’s the, he’s the last one on that day to get killed, by the same way, by the same people, and for the same reason.”
As Empowerment Week draws near, certain areas of Birmingham will be closed from September 9-16 to allow for easier access to the events.

Joseph Christopher Honea was killed just after midnight in an auto accident on Shelby County 39 in Chelsea.
“I felt like they weren’t just a part of the [civil rights movement] in Birmingham, but they were a part of the movement as a whole, so I wanted to capture the spirit of the whole movement,” Williams explained.
Mario Rolando Dimas was arrested on Saturday around 11 a.m. by deputies with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a call around 1:30 a.m. on Monday to investigate a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, deputies learned the robbery occurred two hours prior to the initial call. The victim was hesitant to call and report the incident because of the illegal business being run.
According to Sgt. Johnny Williams with the Birmingham Police Department, the wreck happened in front of the Target shopping center.
Birmingham plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement with a large schedule of events during the week. People from all corners of the country are expected to visit the Magic City for the events.
Investigators say the death of a 3-year-old Alabama boy who was found in a car appears to be an accident.
“It changed the face of education. It was very, very important,” explained Bridges. “For a long time I thought it was a part of history that was swept under the rug and people didn’t talk about it.”
“We actually work a lot more than people think we do, but sometimes people give us credit.”
